Twitter Updates Include 30-Second Videos and Group Messages

Twitter has updated its microblogging service with two new features alongside a list of hotfixes and small user interface updates.

A new short-video option allows users to upload 30 second videos onto Twitter, making its purchase of Vine three years ago seem even more questionable.

Vine will continue to be updated and will exist alongside Twitter's new video service. It's questionable who'll use Vine, now there is Instagram Video and Twitter, which both offer more seconds.

Users will also be able to group message followers, further pushing its underused DM service. It comes after rumors of a messaging acquisition by Twitter, potentially showing the microblogging site wants to flesh out its own messenger.

"In just a few taps you can add a video to unfolding conversations, share your perspective of a live event, and show your everyday moments instantly, without ever having to leave the app. Viewing and playing videos is just as simple: videos are previewed with a thumbnail and you can play them with just one tap", Twitter said on its blog page.

The video feature will be available first on iPhone and will come to Android later. No Windows Phone date has been added, meaning another feature will be coming later on to the third largest mobile platform.

Twitter believes the availability of so many personalities makes its own direct messaging service unique, compared to services like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

The microblogging site is slowly adding more features to its service, while continuing to keep it simple to use and not make it overwhelming for newer users.

Some investors are questioning Twitter's long-term goals, considering the service continues to run at an operating loss. Twitter has been investing in video advertising over the last few months and broadening its video service to content creators.
