(Photo : Sony) Sony Music Unlimited is dead, in its place comes a new partnership between Sony and Spotify for PlayStation users.

Using the motto 'If you can't beat 'em, join 'em', Sony today announced it will partner with Spotify to create PlayStation Music, a new music streaming service.

Sony has officially dropped support for Sony Music Unlimited after a rather unsuccessful try at beating Spotify, Rdio and other music streaming services.

The new service will first be available on PlayStation Network and Xperia devices and will subsequently encompass over 80 million users worldwide.

"This partnership represents the best in music and the best in gaming coming together," Sony president Andrew House said. "We're thrilled to make Spotify the foundation of our strategy with PlayStation Music."

Sony Music Unlimited subscribers will be given a free month of PlayStation Music before having to sign-up for the new streaming service.

Sony looks to use its PlayStation brand for any digital subscription service. The PS4 is a big seller for Sony at a time when its mobile, TV and tablet divisions are not doing well financially.

The deal gives Spotify access to 64 million potential customers. It also brings Sony's music division, which is notorious for its absence on some music services, closer to Spotify.

"As a gamer and PlayStation 4 user myself, I'm super excited to be able to soundtrack my FIFA 15 Arsenal matches later this spring," said Spotify founder Daniel Ek.

Sony will rollout PlayStation Music to more platforms within 2015.
