Kilometer-high Phoenix Towers to rise in China

Set to be an 'iconic landmark' in China, Chetwood Architects design the Phoenix Towers to reflect the astounding colors of the sunsets in the region making it seem to be colored in a bright pink and green shade.

With the design inspired by dualism in Chinese culture, the futuristic towers will rise at one kilometer atop the Yangtze River in the central city of Wuhan surpassing the world's current tallest building in Dubai with 830 meters.

According to the UK-based design firm, the name of the towers is derived from Feng Huang, a pair of mythical birds in Chinese culture which are traditionally used to denote royalty.

Groundbreaking is expected to occur next year and the construction itself will be done in as little as three years.

Much like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, lower floors of the skyscraper will be devoted to apartments and businesses while upper levels will be used as recycling plants.

Celestial-themed restaurants accessible via "skywalks" are also included in the design located in the three large spheres representing the planets orbiting the towers.

This environment-friendly project by the Hua Yan Group will be built with solar power, wind turbines and an air-cleaning and filtration system.

Other unique eco-friendly features include pollution-absorbing surfaces to filter the city's air as well as technology to aerate and filter water.

"The Feng Tower uses innovative technology to 'feed' the Huang tower with renewable power in a symbiotic process", the design firm said.

"It is wonderful to work in China-the response to new ideas is always enthusiastic and optimistic," says Laurie Chetwood in an interview.

"The chance to develop a unique site-a large lake in a large city-provides a wonderful opportunity to create something very special for China."
