"All of our scouts felt he had the most upside," Cavs general manager David Griffin said. "We knew for quite some time in our minds who we wanted to take if we kept the pick."
Miami Heat's LeBron James will be a free agent this coming July and have been played with the Cavs after being selected as the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. The pick on Wiggins might spark an interest on James to come back to Cleveland but of course, it will take a lot more convincing than the 19-year-old small forward.
Milwaukee Bucks have 2nd pick and have selected forward Jabari Parker of Duke University.
Bucks general manager John Hammond said: "We were fairly assured that this is exactly what we needed to do. I feel even more so after it's done."
"He's a matchup problem," Hammond said. "He can create a shot for himself, can also go into the post and put his back to the basket."
Third overall pick goes to the Philadelphia 76ers and they chose Cameroonian player Joel Embiid who was a former Kansas Jayhawks center.
"It's a very exciting day for me and my family," Embiid said before the draft. "A lot of hard work has gone into my journey to be here today and I am truly blessed to be able to realize my dream of being drafted. While I wish I could be in New York, I'm happy that my family is here with me to celebrate with me. I'm more determined than ever and looking forward to getting back to work with my new team."
The 7-footer averaged 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds in his freshman year with the Jayhawks. He also blocked 72 shots that earned him to be the Big 12 defensive player of the year.
Others that made it into the NBA and rounding out the top ten picks of the draft are Aaron Gordon who was picked 4th overall by the Orlando Magic, Dante Exum picked 5th overall by the Utah Jazz, Marcus Smart by the Boston Celtics, Julius Randle by the Los Angeles Lakers, Nik Stauskas by the Sacramento Kings, Noah Vonleh by the Charlotte Hornets and Elfrid Payton by the Sixers.
