Alibaba Invests US$10 Million in Android Console Ouya

Ouya gets a second chance at life.

Alibaba is reportedly investing US$10 million into microconsole maker Ouya after the latter had a rather unfavorable 2014 and showed no signs of large growth in this year.

Ouya was a highly successful Kickstarter that raised US$8 million in 2012 with the promise of a microconsole running games on Android. The end results were a bit less exciting, to say the least, with the console receiving poor reviews and faring badly against Sony and Microsoft.

Gamers soon gave up on Ouya and decided more rounded consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One were better purchases.

For those that still enjoy playing Towerfall and other titles on Ouya, however, today has a bit of good news for them, although it's questionable exactly what the investment is meant to do.

Ouya might move into the Chinese market with the new investment from Alibaba, but it's questionable how many people in China want to play Android games on their TV.

Alibaba might also see some hope in Ouya's next few years as the company looks to work more on the software and services side the device and potentially sell the ROM to hardware manufacturers.

Ouya and Alibaba haven't commented on the report.
