A new organization called OpenBiome offers people a chance to earn US$13,000 a year by selling their feces.

The stool samples will be frozen and later transplanted into patients suffering from bacterial infections from "Clostridium difficile". This condition often results in painful abdominal cramps that can keep patients in their homes for a long time. Antibiotic treatment can be effective for only a short period of time since the bacteria returns after treatment ceases.

To treat those afflicted, fecal matter from other people are transplanted into infected patients using flexible tubes that pass through the intestines.

Finding fecal donors has been challenging for organizations that treat patients suffering from C. difficile infections (CDI). OpenBiome can pay donors US$40 per sample and a US$50 bonus for those who are willing to donate five times a week.

Not anyone can be a suitable donor as interested donors have to undergo an extensive medical screening. Only 40 people were eligible to donate from the first 1,000 people that applied for the program.

Researchers of OpenBiome said fecal transplantation has proven it can cure 90 percent of those suffering from recalcitrant C. difficile in which antibiotic treatment failed.

Only less than two ounces of fecal matter is needed to treat each patient. One donation can treat three to four sufferers.

OpenBiome said some 14,000 to 30,000 Americans die every year from CDI. This bacteria is found in soil and animal droppings.

The fecal treatment can be the most effective option for those afflicted with this serious bacterial infection.
