American Sniper is now the highest grossing movie on a Super Bowl weekend with its $31.9 million gross sales.

The Clint Eastwood film thinly exceeded the previous top grossing film on a Super Bowl weekend, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which grossed $31.1 million during NFL's big game in 2008.

It's a tradition in Hollywood not to release a new picture every Super Bowl weeken, as most moviegoers would stay hooked on TV, but the American Sniper managed to hold on to boost its gross to $248.9 million, six weeks after its premier.

On a distant No. 2 spot is Paddington, which earned only $8.5 million on its third weekend, virtually tying with Paramount's found-footage, time-traveling thriller Project Almanac, which landed the third spot.

On the fourth spot is Black or White, which grossed $6.5 million. Costner even placed his own money to keep the film rolling for the Relativity Media-released movie.

The Jennifer-starrer The Boy Next Door rounded up the top five with its $6.1 million gross.
