June 18th, Huawei Technologies Company revealed new handsets at a launch event in London. The star of the show was the new flagship Ascend P6. Huawei Technologies Co. seems to be taking a page out of Samsung Electronics Company's playbook.
Three months after Samsung introduced its Galaxy S4 smartphone with a Broadway-style show in New York, Huawei Company is trying to build up a highlight for its upcoming smartphone with an event in London on Tuesday.
In its first global product launch, Huawei will unveil its flagship smartphone, the Ascend P6. Huawei is known globally for its telecommunications equipment such as antennas and base stations. Previously, this company introduced new handsets quietly at trade shows such as the annual Mobile World Congress. The company generates about 70% of its revenue overseas, and Europe is its biggest market outside China.
Huawei, the world's second-largest supplier of telecom-network equipment, is trying to establish itself as a consumer brand by increasing its marketing efforts. The Ascend P6 may determine the future of Huawei's smartphone business, at a time when its core telecom-equipment business faces more challenges because of security concerns raised by in the U.S. and the U.K.
Yu Chengdong, who heads Huawei's consumer-business group, said in a recent post on Sina Weibo: "We expect the Ascend P6 to work miracles." For the past few weeks, Mr. Yu has shared pieces of information about the new ultrathin smartphone. He has posted a photo of the P6 on his Facebook page, showing parts of the phone's display and rounded edge.
Although Huawei has declined to give out details on the new smartphone, several technology blogs have reported that the P6 will likely come with a 4.7-inch display as well as a metal casing, and be just about one-quarter inch thick. The phone is expected to run on Android operating system.
In the past year, the company has been introducing more Huawei-branded smartphones with large high-resolution screens and other features typically offered by other better-known competitors. The P6 likely represents Huawei's biggest step in that direction.
