50 Shades of Grey Gets 18 and Over Rating in the U.K.

Good news for American teenagers under 17 who are hoping to see 50 Shades of Grey, since they are allowed to see the film as long as they are accompanied by adults thanks to its R rating. But those in the U.K. weren't as fortunate because the British Board of Film Classification has slapped it with an 18 rating, meaning nobody under the age of 18, even with an adult, will be allowed to watch the movie.

The British's 18 rating is similar to America's NC-17 rating and they are given to movies which contain "strong portrayals of sexual activity" or "scenes of sexual violence." According to the BBFC's website, the reason why the much-anticipated 50 Shades of Grey was given the rating was because it "contains strong sex and nudity, along with the portrayal of erotic role play based on domination, submission and sado-masochistic practices."
"Strong sex" is probably the best way to describe the film, especially that twenty minutes of its run-time are dedicated to sex.
50 Shades of Grey tells the story of billionaire, Christian Grey and college student, Anastasia Steele's unusual relationship. Director, Sam Taylor-Johnson's take on this best-selling novel is set to hit the theatres on Valentine's day. The first screenings of the movie will start on February 11 in France and Belgium.
