A new processor might yet herald the beginning of the final decline of the dominance of the traditional desktop PC.
To be introduced in 2016, two new ARM processors promises to outfit smartphones that will allow users to write longer stories and edit photos, two activities PCs and laptops now do better than phones.

The new processors--the Cortex-A72 processor and Mali-T880 graphics chip--are expected to lead to new smartphones and devices that allow users to be more productive using their phones. The goal of ARM Holdings plc, makers of ARM processors, is to replace PCs with smartphones as the single device for any need.
The processors were made especially for 16 nanometer chip designs that lets chipmakers produce smaller and stronger chips.
The PC still dominates in many tasks, especially those involving writing stories, editing videos or producing music. Analysts said it still remains too hard to accomplish these tasks using a smartphone. But they expect the new ARM processors to close the gap significantly.
ARM is a family of instruction set architectures for computer processors. They're ideal for light, portable, battery-powered devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets and notepads since they're cheaper, emit much less heat and consume much less power.
"I think innovation is accelerating in the phone space," said ARM executive Ian Ferguson said. "We think the phone is becoming the primary compute platform."
ARM also claims its new technologies will boost energy efficiency, allowing device makers to develop thinner and longer lasting devices.
"We're going to start seeing a change this year," Ferguson said about users creating more content on their smartphones. "I think '16 is a pivotal year where you're going to see a significant uptick."
The Cortex-A72 processor has 50 times more performance than similar technology from five years ago and 75 percent lower energy consumption compared to last year's devices. Mali-T880 offers a performance boost versus its predecessor and features lower energy use.
