Germany's Angelique Kerber eliminates crowd favorite Russian Maria Sharapova in three sets to advance to the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2014 Wimbledon Championships.
Defending French Open champion Sharapova dropped her very first set of the tournament against 9th seed Kerber but holds serve at the second set to take the match into overtime.
An upset was brewing when 26-year-old Kerber broke Sharapova's serve and leads the third set 3-0. But Sharapova couldn't break Kerber's nerves as she loses her chances of winning her second Wimbledon crown.
The final score in favor of Kerber 7(7)-6(4) 4-6 6-4 in a match that lasted an hour and 37 minutes at Center Court under a crowd of 15,000 at the All England Club in London.
Kerber now faces in the quarters Canadian star and 13th seed Eugenie Bouchard, whom she defeated in last year's US Open at the second round of play.
The 20-year-old Bouchard advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, who won over No. 1 seed American Serena Williams.
Opposite Kerber's quarterfinals match with Bouchard is the battle of previous runners-up featuring recent French Open runner-up Romanian Simona Halep and current Wimbledon 2nd place finisher German Sabine Lisicki.
Halep advanced to the quarters by defeating Kazakh Zarina Diyas in two straight sets while Lisicki survives a three set match against another Kazakh Yaroslava Shvedova.
In the other half of the quarterfinals bracket, the matches already held place Tuesday where Czech Lucie Safarova won against Russian Ekaterina Makarova and an all-Czech quarters won by 6th seed Petra Kvitova against Barbora Strycova.
Strycova reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance after defeating 2nd seed China's Li Na in the third round and 16th seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the fourth round of play.
Both Safarova and Kvitova have already advanced to the semi-finals and this assures of Czech Republic a representative in the finals scheduled on Saturday.
