Walt Disney Company and Sony Corporation announced that Spider-Man will have an appearance in the upcoming Disney-produced Marvel super-heroes movie "Captain America: Civil War" that will be released in 2016.
A person with knowledge of the matter told The Wall Street Journal that the appearance of Spider-Man in the Captain America movie is part of Sony's efforts to revive Spider-Man's popularity following a disappointing box office performance for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" last summer.

Walt Disney and Sony have agreed to share custody of the web-slinger on the big screen. After the appearance of Spider-Man in Captain America, Marvel will then co-produce the next Spider-Man Movie that will be financed by Sony Pictures and released in 2017.
Sony controls cinematic rights to Spider-Man under a long-term license and the company seeks to keep full control of the Marvel character as early as December.
The latest announcement about the shared custody of Spider-Man indicated that Sony's plans have recently been changed.
"This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans," Sony Pictures chief executive Michael Lynton said in a statement.
The next Spider-Man movie will be produced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige along with Amy Pascal, the departing co-chairman of Sony Pictures.
The title of the next Spider-Man movie has not been disclosed yet but sources said the movie will mark a third creative start for the character following the initial trilogy of movies and two "Amazing Spider-Man" movies.
The latest development also postponed the released of "The Sinister Six", a Sony-produced movie about a group of Spider-Man villains.
The movie had been scheduled for released in November of 2016 but the new deal between Sony and Walt Disney caused the delay of the release of "The Sinister Six".
