Zach Braff Apologizes After He Compared Pharrell Williams’ Outfit to the Monkey in the Wizard of Oz

All celebrities should have learned by now that they should think before they tweet. And Zach Braff, the star of Scrubs, has learned that lesson when he was faced with some vicious backlash after comparing Pharrel Williams' outfit to the monkey in The Wizard of Oz.

Pharrel performed his award-winning song Happy at the Grammys and wore a bellboy-type hat and jacket. Many viewers tweeted and discussed the similarity between Pharrell's outfit and the lobby boy in the movie, The Grand Budapest Hotel. However, there were others who wondered if his outfit was a reference to black bellhops because of the political symbolism present in his performance.

Zach joined the online discussion when he posted a picture of Pharrell and the flying monkey from the movie, Oz The Great and Powerful. He captioned the photo, "Grammys are time-delayed in LA (?!) but someone just sent me this: #IWoreItBetter."

His post was not taken well by netizens and was called out for being insensitive and for not being aware of the fact that comparing African Americans to monkeys is considered as an offensive racial slur.

He quickly took to Twitter to apologize and posted, "I love Pharrell. I thought the outfit he wore was similar to that of my bell hop in Oz. I apologize."

Not only was Pharrell's outfit a much talked about topic on social media outlets, but his politically-charged performance garnered so much attention as well. He included dancers dressed in black hoodies who made a "hands up, don't shoot" pose, which was used as a reference by protesters after the Michael Brown and Eric Garner shooting incident, while the use of hoodies were speculated by some as a reference to Trayvon Martin's death.

Pharrell went home with two Grammy awards for Best Solo Performance and Best Video for his hit song, "Happy."
