The country's 10 most dangerous roads were identified as a warning to the millions of travelers during the Spring Festival holiday rush.

"Drivers are urged to pay close attention to traffic conditions and reduce their speed in poor visibility, especially when the pass by these dangerous stretches of roads," one official said.

According to the ministry, the most dangerous stretch of road last year was a section of National Highway 102, which joins Hebei province and Tianjin.

Last year, a total of 279 road accidents in the area killed 149 people. The accidents were mostly frontal or side collisions.

Part of National Highway 104 in Shandong province was the second-most deadly. At at least 80 people died in 298 accidents that took place in the area.

Third on the list is a section of National Highway 327, still in Shandong. A total of 200 road accidents that occurred in the area killed 67 people last year.

According to the country's transport ministry, more than 3.2 billion road trips were made during the Spring Festival travel rush in 2014 and the number is expected to increase in this year's 40-day celebration.

China's transport sector has been working at maximum capacity since the start of the month as hundreds of millions of journeys are made during the annual travel peak.

The 40-day Spring Festival begins on 19 February and authorities are anticipating a sharp rise in road traffic around the country as people return home for family reunions and gatherings.
