News of his death shocked thousands of fans, who sometimes garbed themselves with outfits of the animated characters he created.

Heartfelt outpouring of grief, tributes and emotional condolences flooded social networking sites, including Tumblr, Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, YouTube, even Google Docs.

"He changed my life and my outlook on work and creativity, on being a good person and a good friend," one fan said.

"I wasn't expecting to feel so crushed," another fan wrote.

Oum gained fame and immediately enjoyed a strong following within the gaming community after he released the successful video Haloid in 2007 on GameTrailers. An article in Destructoid called the video "the most interesting Halo-related fan movie in existence," enjoying over four million views and making it the most viewed user-created content on the site.

Also in 2007, he released the first video in his Dead Fantasy fan series, following it with five episodes and a preview of the eighth episode.

Oum was also the genius behind two music video spin-offs of the series, which he named after the songs the lead casts danced to.

In the first music video, the main characters were seen dancing to Mariah Carey's 2009 hit single, "Obsessed." While the second music video was just like his first video, the characters, however, were dancing to the tune of "Gee," the hit single by KPop group, Girls' Generation.
