You'd think people would quit using the world's lamest passwords like "123456" since any hacker with a brain can figure them out. Turns out, people just won't or don't learn.
For the second year in a row in 2014, the password "123456" was the world's most common password. It was followed by -- wait for it -- "password", according to SplashData's "Worst Passwords of 2014". Password was also the second most common password in 2013.

A look at the list of the top 25 most common passwords confirms these are the hackers' best friend. And judging from the results of the survey, hackers have got a lot of friends out there.
In 2014, the top 25 most frequently used passwords accounted for 2.2 percent of total passwords.
The SplashData report was compiled from over 3.3 million leaked passwords. It noted the undying immortality of these lame passwords continues to prove people are generally lazy and not too creative.
Nine of which are numbers-only codes, which seems smart until one finds out that among these numbers-only codes are "1234", "12345" and "12345678". Really brainy, huh?
SplashData, a password management firm, said Web users leave themselves at risk by using weak, easily guessable keys. It suggests passwords using only numbers should be avoided, especially a number sequence like "12345".
"Passwords based on simple patterns on your keyboard remain popular despite how weak they are," said SplashData CEO Morgan Slain.
He noted longer keyboard patterns are becoming common passwords as more websites require stronger passwords or combinations of letters and numbers, but these longer passcodes still aren't secure.
SplashData said people should use a combination of eight or more letters and numbers to ensure their security. People should also avoid using the same username-password combination for multiple websites.
