New Ad Campaign Seeks to Empower Girls Through Changing the Meaning of 'Like a Girl'

A new ad campaign from Always aims to reclaim the word 'girl' by showing that females have no reason to be ashamed of doing things 'like a girl.'

Director Lauren Greenfield hopes to use the online video to question why the phrase 'like a girl', when used to describe someone, has come to imply that the person is weak or silly.

Greenfield voiced in the video's description that using the term 'like a girl' can be extremely disempowering to women. Always' social media campaign #LikeAGirl hopes to turn the phrase from an insult into a good thing.

At the start of the video, the director begins by asking several different adults and a young boy what it means to do things 'like a girl.' When asked to run like a girl or fight like a girl, all start to flail and kick awkwardly and one man even pastes a silly smile on his face as he throws his hands out in weak slaps.

But the video takes a positive turn when young girls are brought in and asked to do things 'like a girl.' Instead of displaying weakness, all of them exhibited all their energy in running, throwing, and fighting like a girl.

When one young girl is asked what it means to run 'like a girl,' she responds that it means "run fast as you can."

The video states that young women face strikes to their confidence during puberty as negative comments can affect their belief that they can be just as strong, confident, and independent as boys.

It's exciting to see 'like a girl' being turned into a positive comment which can empower young girls and women to strive to be their best, and strongest, selves.

As one commentator said toward the end of the video, running like a girl can also mean that it is the girl who is winning the race.
