Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard reaches her first ever Grand Slam finals after coming out victorious against Romanian Simona Halep at the ongoing 2014 Wimbledon Championships.
The 13th seed Bouchard was ruthless with her attacks as 3rd seed Halep twisted her left ankle while running to the baseline in only 12 minutes of the first set. After doctors gave Halep some treatment, the match continued and Halep showed what fighting spirit is all about as she rallied from 5-3 down to a tie-break.
"I felt a big pain and couldn't push any more on my leg," said Halep. "My first serve was really bad after that."
But luck is on Bouchard's side as a net cord benefited her. That was all what the 2012 Junior Wimbledon champion needed as she rallied to win the tie-break 7(7)-6(5).
The second set was all in favor of 20-year-old Bouchard as the French Open runner-up Halep began to feel the pressure and loss of energy from the lack of recuperation time from one Grand Slam to another. Bouchard finishes off the set with a score of 6-2 making her first Wimbledon finals appearance.
Bouchard will now face Czech and 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the finals and her Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranking will improve. But Bouchard is not inclined to celebrate just yet.
"I get to make Canadian history again," Bouchard said after the game. "But my job is not done. I want to go another step further. So I'm going to stay focused. After doing well in the past few Slams I've been believing since the beginning of this tournament that I can do really well. But I'm just so excited for the next match."
Bouchard has thus far reached the semi-finals in all of the Grand Slam tournaments this year, having been eliminated by Australian Open champion China's Li Na and French Open champion Russian Maria Sharapova.
