Study: Eating More Fiber Can Help You Lose Weight

Diet fads are everywhere. Researchers, however, believe that less is more when they found a new diet that can help anyone lose weight without complications and that still gets results.

A new study recommends dieters eat just 30 grams of fiber every day, according to researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Researchers selected 240 adults for a multi-component American Heart Association (AHA) diet, or a very simple diet the consists in eating small amounts of fiber every day.

The volunteers in the high fiber diet were asked to eat a variety of legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains including fruits and vegetables. They were told they could also eat whatever they want since researchers did not restrict calories or care where those other calories came from.

Researchers found out that people on this high fiber diet lost as much weight as those who followed the AHA diet.

This diet consisted of fats, proteins, carbohydrates and sodium. After a year, there was no significant difference among the two groups in terms of weight loss.

Researchers also noted that in the U.S., adults only consume 16 grams of fiber everyday and only about 7.1 percent of adults between the ages of 40 to 59 years old eat some 30 grams or more a day.

According to Sherry Pagono, a clinical psychologist from University of Massachusetts Medical School, the simple strategy of telling people to eat more of something made them lose some weight.

Most diets restrict dieters about food they can eat and restricting different kinds of activities. This one tells dieters to just eat a lot of fiber so they can lose weight effectively.

Researchers monitored the participants of the high fiber diet. These participants performed well in terms of lower blood pressure and better blood sugar levels compared to those following the AHA diet.

This study was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
