Typhoon Neoguri has increased its speed as it headed towards the western part of the city of Itoman in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.
Neoguri is now classified as a Super Typhoon with maximum wind speeds of up to 150 mph (220 kph) and wind gusts of up to 185 mph. It slowed down, picking up more wind speed in the favorable warm waters of the Pacific Ocean, moving northwest at a speed of 16 mph.
Neoguri is now an extremely dangerous cyclone and may hit landfall in the vicinity of the Kerama Group of Islands in the Shimajiri District of Okinawa, particularly Tokashiki and Zamami islands before it turns towards the Okinawa Prefecture.
The tropical storm became a typhoon Friday or an equivalent to that of a hurricane in the Western Pacific and slowly made its way west-northwest over the Pacific. It is the strongest tropical cyclone thus far.
Neoguri is expected to become a Category 5 cyclone Tuesday morning as it enters the Ryukyu Islands with maximum winds reaching more than 156 mph.
Kadena Air Base is a United States installation located in the Nakagami District of the Okinawa Island. They have reported that Neoguri is 600 miles south-southeast of the air base Sunday morning.
The Super Typhoon is expected to make a major landfall by mid-day Wednesday at the Prefecture of Kumamoto and traverse the direction towards Hiroshima. It will then lose its strength before exiting the waters again somewhere in between the cities of Matsue and Tottori in the Chugoku region.
Neoguri is currently in the Philippines, locally named "Florita", and is causing rainfall in the Western part of the country. It is expected to exit the area Tuesday morning before making its way in the evening at the Ryukyu Islands.
Some forecasts expect the storm to go north-northwest after reaching the Ryukyu Islands and may go near the area of Ningbo, China instead of a more northwestern direction towards Okinawa, Japan.
