Heavy Use of Twitter Can Hurt Relationships

Too much use of Twitter can create a dispute on relationships and conflicts among romantic couples, a recent report showed.

According to Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, a journal which studies the effect of emerging technology to one’s behavior, the massive use of Twitter can lead to Twitter-related disharmony among romantic couples and will eventually lead to infidelity, break-up and divorce.

Russell Clayton, author and doctoral researcher at University of Missouri, made a conclusion that findings from the Twitter study is connected to the evidence that the use of social network can open up the dark side of personal relationship.

Clayton’s research on Facebook in 2013 revealed that heavy use of Facebook was associated with negative outcomes among relationships.

Brenda Wiederhold, editor-in-chief of Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, commented that findings suggest for further study on the use of social networking sites. Wiederhold said that other social media like Instagram might have the same effect on the couples’ relationship.

581 adult Twitter users were asked how often they use different social network sites and the conflicts they experienced between their former or current partners when they use Twitter.

Clayton’s research showed that participants’ more use of Twitter, the more conflicts were likely to arise with their partner. He said that heavy use of both Twitter, along with Facebook, can have bad effects on romantic couples and ruin the relationship later on.

“That is, when (social networking) use becomes problematic in one’s romantic relationship, risk of negative relationship outcomes may follow,” Clayton said.
