A Brazilian bar, Salve Jorge in São Paulo, has started serving drinks in a special glass, which it can only stand up if it's rested on a smartphone, and this can force drinkers to keep away from looking their phones all the time and start socialize with their friends.
The Offline Glass has been developed by advertising agency Fischer & Friends. A wedge is cut in the bottom of the glass, which means it has to lean on something as thick as a smartphone in order to stand up straight. According to the designers' initial motivation, "customers of the bar staring at their phone have two choices: they can either continue staring at their phone and have their frosty cold drinks spill all over the table. Or, they can use their smartphone to prop up the glass and keep it from tipping over. And if you're wondering about beer dripping down the side and destroying your phone, those behind it say that it is cut in a way to prevent condensation from dripping down the side of the glass when it is resting on your handset."
Fischer & Friends says it's designed to "rescue people from the online world", saving them from keep texting and gaming, and "bring them back to their tables."
However, the smartphone's vibration function may be a problem, as incoming texts or calls could send the Offline Glass wobbling or make it fall over.
