Siberian Tigers Might Be Making Their Way Back To China

A Siberian tiger family was seen in a video where the mother tiger and her cubs are possibly making their way back to China, a sign that the endangered species are trying to make their way back to the area where they have been wiped out from for almost 65 years now.

According to conservationists, the mother tiger with her two cubs were seen 30 km from the Russian border. The tiger family is one of the last remaining Siberian tigers also known as Amur tigers. Its population is just 450.

These tigers were spotted before but this was the first ever recorded video of proof that they are in the mainland.

John Barker, the leader of the Asian programs in World Wildlife Fund (WWF), said the video is a confirmation that this species is trying to re-establish in China and not just continue getting in and out of Russia and that the video shows the tigers were breeding in China.

However, Barker pointed out that the video is still not an assurance as there is still a long road ahead for these tigers to finally get back to the mainland.

But at least the video serves as an opportunity as he called out on the government, the society and the community to work together in order to sustain the population of the Siberian tigers in China.

The tigers were seen in the north-eastern part of China, which is said to be the prime habitat of the species.

Barker pointed out that the forest is still inhabitable but the large scale commercial logging and poaching could again affect these species in the long run.

WWF has been working on letting the Siberian tigers get back to China for at least six years now and they have also focused on luring back the deer for the tigers to prey on.

According to the senior manager of WWF-China's Asian big cat's program, the shortage in the number of prey has threatened the tigers and so it was a priority to restore the population of the prey.
