Stewart, famously known for her role as Bella in the Twilight series, received the prestigious award on Friday for playing Valentine in the film "Clouds of Sils Maria," which also stars Juliette Binoche and Chloë Grace Moretz.

In the movie, which was directed by France's Olivier Assayas, Stewart plays Binoche's role's Maria Enders' personal assistant and follows Enders and Valentines' passionate relationship.

When Stewart gave her acceptance speech, she openly expressed his admiration for Binoche and explained that it was truly a privilege to be working with one of France's leading ladies for more than three decades. She even told Binoche, "I love you," in French.

"Clouds of Sils Maria" marks Stewart's return to art-house films, who was propelled into the spotlight when she starred as Bella opposite Robert Pattinson in the very successful Twilight movies.

Others who emerged victorious that night were Abderrahmane Sissako, who won Best Director for the film "Timbuktu," (Timbuktu took home seven of the eight categories, in which it was nominated, including Best Film) Adèle Haenel as Best Actress and Kevin Azaïs for their roles in Les Combattants. The film also won the Best Debut Feature award.

Louane Emera accepted the Best Female Newcomer award, as well as Pierre Niney who went home with the Best Actor award.

Aside from Stewart, American actor Sean Penn, best known for his roles in Mystic River and Milk, was awarded the César Lifetime achievement award.
