Newly-hatched chickens are smarter than 4-year-old human babies

Baby chicks are really adorable, but do you know that these cute little things are much smarter than 4-year-old human babies? According to the WenWeiPo report on June 20, 2013, a new study from the University of Bristol has found baby chickens have many skills that baby humans do not have.

According to the study, "93% of chicks in one test-in which they could get more food if they waited longer to eat-were able to exhibit self-control; humans usually don't have this skill until age four. Besides, the chicks also had an instinctive understanding of structural engineering (seriously), preferring more structurally sound cubes when given the choice between two."

Unlike human baby, newborn chicks have numeracy skills; researchers offered them groups of eggs, with the chicks almost always choosing the larger group, even when the researchers tried to trick them by moving the eggs around. The study's lead researcher says: "Chickens may not be about to make a significant mathematical, scientific, or literary contribution to the world, but the study shows that chickens have the capacity to master skills and develop abilities that a human child can take months and years to accomplish."

The study has also found out chickens have an instinctive ability to recognize structurally sound objects, favoring these over ones which seem dubious or inconsistent. They have showed awareness of objects that fall out of sight, keeping track of them in a way, however, human babies will start to have this ability when they are age of about one.
