Myanmar Urges China To Stop Supporting Rebel Groups As Border Clashes Continue

(Photo : Reuters/Khin Maung Win) Kokang ethnic soldiers stand outside a deserted market as a convoy carrying diplomats and foreign journalists visits Laukkai, capital of Myanmar's Kokang region, Sept. 8, 2009.
As clashes continue in the southwest border of mainland China and Myanmar, the latter's officials are calling on Beijing to stop rebel groups that enter China and attack them.
Officials appealed to Beijing to assist them despite the conflict between the two countries as they asked if China could stop terrorists from entering the mainland. Hmuu Zaw, one of the representatives of Myanmar President Thein Sein, released a statement on Facebook saying it is necessary for the two countries to cooperate to prevent terrorist attacks against Myanmar from being launched from China.

The appeal comes after earlier reports surfaced about a former army chief from Myanmar who accused "foreign powers" of supporting the insurgents. Peng Jiasheng, an ousted rebel leader who has been travelling and hiding, said in a recent public appearance that he has claimed leadership over the Chinese Kokang region, which proves that the rebels have indeed penetrated mainland China.
Chinese officials said Peng had no other choice, together with the other rebels, but to fight Myanmar and call on China to help them in their battle and to intervene in behalf of the insurgents.
However, the Foreign ministry spokeswoman of China, Hua Chunying, announced that they are not working with the group as they respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Myanmar. They do not allow insurgents to further strain the ties of China and Myanmar, she explained.
Hua added that they hope the conflicting parties of Myanmar could stop the escalating violence in order to not affect the stability of China and Myanmar as they already have unresolved conflicts in the border area.
