The ticket to earning big bucks with your pet used to be through clever tricks at dog shows. But those days are long past as a clever strategy and social media can make your pet the biggest online sensation there is, and you a happy profiting master.

Random videos of your canine friend goofing off in front of the camera won't cut it. Corporate sponsors need to see a well-thought-out campaign before signing the pet for endorsements and merchandise.

"What captivates a mass audience and goes viral usually is not a fluke," notes Jonah Berger, a marketing professor at the Wharton School of Business.

"You need a good story to get started, and then you need a savvy strategy," he stressed.

Berger also points out that while the common perception is that luck plays a big role in things, a good plan can help make the pet videos be seen and heard.

Over half a million is the benchmark to reel in 'serious money' cites Katie Surino, owner of a toothless King Charles puppy named Toast .

"The ones who have really broken out are getting a lot," she adds. Toast presently has 173,000 Instagram followers (@toastmeetsworld) and a possible future as an endorser.

For Tuna, a Chiuahua and daschund mixed breed, all it took was featuring his silly bite on Instagram (@tunametlsmyheart). He now has a whopping 1.1 million IG followers and a $14.95 book called "The Underdog with the Overbite," to hit shelves in two weeks.

On the other hand there is Boo, a Pomeranian, with around 17 million Facebook fans, several books, a toy line and the title "official pet liason" of Virgin America Inc. to his name.

Wendy Diamond, an animal advocate and author, maintains that personality can take the pet places. "Your dog either has to have a deformity or a disability or a well-connected parent."

But it doesn't always have to be this way.

As for Manny, French bulldog of couple Jon Huang and Amber Chavez, his claim to fame came from his owners sharing pictures and videos with some friends and family.

Now Manny has reached 648,000 Instagram followers (@manny_the_frenchie) and over 800,000 Facebook likes on his page, @Mannythefrenchie.

The couple saw this as an opportunity to raise money for charity and has since garnered over $100,000 in the past year alone.

Manny is currently working with Evanger's Dog Food and Zico Coconut Water, among others, and has merchandising, fund raising and tours left and right.
