Lenovo Seeks Help of McAfee, Windows Defender for Superfish Removal

(Photo : Reuters ) Lenovo has unveiled two new display units - Think Vision X24 Pro and Think Centre XIO 2 - at the CES 2016.

Lenovo has enlisted the help of McAfee and Windows Defender security to block any further activity by Superfish, the adware service capable of copying private details and storing them on a server for third-parties to purchase.

The move comes a few days after Lenovo tried to deny the privacy and security impact Superfish has on computers, claiming the adware could not track users.

This has turned out to be false, and perhaps without Lenovo's knowledge Superfish has documented thousands of browser based user interactions.

Lenovo has since removed Superfish from new computers and is actively blocking the connection, clearly changed by public outrage for installing adware that can track and steal information.

Scamming services alone are enough of a risk on a PC but the fact Lenovo actively pre-installed one is beyond incompetent, and is now paying the price for its failure to overview the bloatware it puts into its computers.

Even with the removal of Superfish and the current trend to make sure Lenovo computers are safe, Lenovo may face serious lawsuits after failing to inform users that browser habits might be tracked.

Considering Lenovo is the largest PC manufacturer in the world, this could have affected millions of computers. Luckily, Superfish was only added recently to a select few computers so the damage might be smaller than anticipated.

The outrage over Lenovo's decision could make computer manufacturers less adventurous with bloatware and stick to first-party applications and nothing else.
