The Paris manual to tourists - “Do you speak Touriste?”

According to the Telegraph report, Paris, one of the world's most visited cities has embarked on a campaign "Do you speak Touriste" to fight against its reputation of rudeness to tourists. The mission of the campaign is to improve the tourism image of Paris and to better cater to the needs of tourists.

"Waiters, taxi drivers and sales staff in the French capital all too often come off as impolite, unhelpful and unable to speak foreign languages." Said the local tourism chiefs. That is the reason why the regional tourism committee is now handing out a manual with guidelines on better etiquette. The "Do you speak Touriste?" manual contains greetings in eight languages and advice on the spending habits and cultural codes of different nationalities.

Jean-Pierre Blat, the general director of the Paris area tourist board says: "The aim is to fight against the poor reputation for welcome in Paris and the Paris area. You don't welcome a Japanese tourist the same way as an Italian one. There are codes to take into account, so you have to adapt."

The manual informs Parisians that British tourists "like to be called by their first names", spend an average of 145 euros per person each day - more than their American counterparts - and eat breakfast from 7.30-8.30am, lunch at 12-1pm and supper at 6-7pm; Brazilians are "easily tactile", Italians are "impatient" and the Spanish constantly on the "lookout for freebies".

And for Chinese, the fastest-growing category of tourists that visit Paris, and the guide refers them as "fervent shoppers" and "a simple smile and hello in their language will fully satisfy them."
