Director Roman Polanski Testifies in Polish Court on U.S. Extradition Request Over Child Sex Crime

Award-winning director Roman Polanski was at a court hearing in Poland on Wednesday to testify on the United States' request to extradite him over a child sex crime conviction in 1977, but the court failed to make a ruling.

The judge handling Polanski's case in Krakow, Dariusz Mazur revealed that the court couldn't make a final decision on Wednesday since they have to review additional documents, which were recently submitted by lawyers of Polanski.

Mazur straightforwardly said that, "The proceeding will not be finished today," Mazur said.

He went on to reveal that the 81-year old's lawyers gave them preliminary documents both in German and in English from Polanski's unsuccessful extradition court hearings in Switzerland in 2010. The filmmaker's hearing promptly began at 9 in the morning and was closed to the media, as requested by Polanski's lawyers.

If the court agrees to the U.S. extradition request, under Polish law, the case can be passed on to the assigned justice minister, who will then make the absolute decision on whether or not Polanski will be handed over to U.S. authorities.

The renowned director pleaded guilty in a sex crime conviction in 1977 for illegally having sex with a 13-year old girl. The incident happened in Los Angeles during a photoshoot fueled with lots of drugs and champagne.

As part of his 90-day or 3-month plea bargain, he spent 42 days in prison. However, he left the United States the next year, believing that the judge handling his case will overrule the deal and place him behind bars for years.

Back in 2009, the U.S. issued an arrest warrant for Polanski and was arrested in Zurich. He was placed under house arrest but was released in 2010 after Swiss authorities decided to let him go and not extradite him.
