Republicans Face Defeat In Net Neutrality Battle

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission may win the battle for full net neutrality, according to new reports claiming several Republicans are backing out of the fight.

It follows the announcement by FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler last month revealing a new plan to reclassify broadband companies under Title II common carrier.

This reclassification would put an end to any "tiered lanes" AT&T, Verizon and Comcast have proposed. It would also force broadband providers to offer its services as utilities, not overcharging for line rental.

Broadband companies have said if the FCC pursues this reclassification they will sue. But with Congress in support of the change, it seems like the ISPs won't be able to change anything.

It's still not final. The FCC must vote on the net neutrality laws tomorrow and will tally the final vote for sometime next week. If some of the FCC commissioners back-out from the broadband reclassification, it could spell trouble.

The immense support for the bill online has shown the public demands less ISP control, and shows support for allowing startups and community broadband projects to flourish where previously they were blocked by the state.

Some claim President Obama's support for broadband reclassification has won the battle against telecoms given the lacklustre support in Congress for the bill before Obama entered the fray.
