Pregnant Woman Gets Jail Sentence In Puppy Burning Case

A pregnant woman who formerly owned a pet shop was sentenced on Wednesday to 14 years behind bars after being caught on surveillance camera burning 27 puppies in Las Vegas.

The suspect, 36-year-old Gloria Eun Hye Lee, who is now three months pregnant, reportedly used her pregnancy to sway the judge from sentencing her but Clark County District Court Judge David Barker did not take her situation into consideration.

Prosecutor Shanon Clowers testified that Lee used her pregnancy as a reason to get a lower sentence and was manipulative. However, Lee's attorney, Tom Pitaro, did not respond yet to the accusation thrown against his client by the prosecutor and the judge handling the case.

The said surveillance video shows Lee removing her things from the "Prince and Princess" pet shop last January 2014. Her co-defendant, Kirk Bills, is also seen pouring some sort of liquid on the floor --- possibly gasoline --- while puppies and dogs were still locked in cages inside the establishment.

Fortunately, the fire sprinklers killed the flames before any of the 27 animals were injured. Firefighters arrived at the scene of the crime and rescued the animals.

Lee pleaded guilty of the charges against her in October including that of arson, attempted animal cruelty charges, and insurance fraud. She also had 28 other charges against and bargained to have these dismissed via a plea deal.

Bills, on the other hand, pleaded guilty to arson and attempted animal cruelty but he is yet to be sentenced on Monday. He reportedly hopes to at least lower his sentence to jailtime between two to five years. He is already serving time behind prison and he hopes to be out of jail by next year.

Shortly after the incident, Lee was arrested in Las Vegas but Bills was arrested days after in Indiana. The dogs that were rescued from the pet shop were raffled two months after the incident and were sold at US$250 per piece and the proceeds were given to a foundation called Lied Animal Shelter.
