More than a dozen people, including students on the way to school, were injured when a Miami-Dade Transit bus carrying 23 passengers crashed into a building Thursday morning.

Witnesses said the bus crashed into a building on Northwest 36th Street and 17th Avenue as the driver tried to avoid an SUV before 7 a.m.

"It happened so fast...  I saw the bus swerving to avoid hitting the SUV and then it happened!" said one of the witnesses.

The bus crashed into the building occupied by South Florida Everything Warehouse, a furnishings business, witnesses said.

Miami Fire Rescue treated 25 people, including the daughter of the SUV's driver. On the bus were 23 people, including students from nearby Miami Jackson Senior High on their way to school.

The accident site is near the Miami Jackson Senior High. Local officials, however, said the injuries were minor, except for the driver who had more extensive injuries.

All of those injured were brought to the Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Ignatius Carroll, a Miami Fire Rescue spokesman, called the victims "walking wounded," with mostly cuts and bruises.

The driver of the SUV was taken into police custody for a bench warrant unrelated to the crash, the Miami-Dade police said.

It was not yet disclosed who was at fault in the incident. Police also has not revealed the exact involvement of the SUV in the crash.

Authorities immediately cordoned the streets in the area, sending motorists to State Road 112, the Airport Expressway, as alternate route.

The accident occurred just hours after a car crashed into a house in North Miami, sending two people to the hospital.

The crash happened after a Nissan ran a stop sign at Northeast 12th Avenue and 147th Street around 2 a.m. Thursday, authorities said.
