Indonesia: Election History is Made

Torn by Wednesday's borderline presidential elections, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono calls for Indonesian presidential candidates to keep their supporters in check during the two-week wait before an official result is announced.

On Thursday, about 250,000 police and 30,000 soldiers comprise the peace keepers scattered all over the archipelago to ensure peace despite two sets of simmering mass of supporters threaten to flood the streets of the country after both candidates declared victory in the country's tightest and most divisive election race in history.

The current Indonesian president set up a meeting with both candidates, Jakarta Governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and ex-military general Prabowo Subianto individually at his house on Wednesday evening to ask them to keep their supporters in check until official results are released on July 22.

In five unofficial polls, Widodo, known for his humble origin and common touch, took the lead with four to five percentage points and declared victory.

"This is a victory for all Indonesian people," he declared in front of his supporters in an evening rally at a park in Jakarta.

Simultaneously, his 62-year-old contender countered with his own declaration of victory basing on other less-known quick count polls.

Prabowo announced that polls followed by his campaign team indicated that he and Hatta Rajasa, his running mate "received the support and mandate from the people of Indonesia" pumping his fist in the air on Wednesday after inciting people to wait for official results.

After leading the country to stability and economic progress in the course of 10 years, the current Indonesian president is set to step down in October, vacating the seat for the next president chosen by about 135 million Indonesians who participated in the election polls.
