5G Yields Fantastic Download Speeds

Ericsson, the Swedish communications technology and services provider, said a 5G test it conducted attained a connection speed of 5 gigabits per second (Gbps) over the air in ideal conditions.
In practical terms, a 5 Gbps connection will enable a 50 gigabyte movie to download in only 80 seconds.

By comparison, 4G, the current mobile telecommunications technology, showed an average of 9.5 megabits per second (Mbps) in tests compared to 3.6 Mbps for 3G and 6 Mbps for DSL.
Tech analyst said the 5 Gbps benchmark is 250 times faster than today's standard LTE (Long Term Evolution) connection. Ericsson's claim is a record for the wireless industry and indicates the speeds possible with 5G that will eventually see its use in smartphones and in other wireless devices.
Ericsson noted that 5G is about getting everything connected while LTE is about getting everyone connected.
LTE is the existing standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals.
Analysts cautioned, however, that Ericsson's test is a theoretical peak speed attained in ideal conditions, which is mostly non-existent in the real world space. They believe the estimated launch of 5G networks by 2020 appears too optimistic given the massive work that has to take place to make the technology commercially viable.
Ericsson said consumers will eventually be able to access the blazing connection speeds promised by 5G. It noted that 5G will be made possible by a real high-performing network.
NTT Docomo, Inc., Japan's predominant mobile phone operator, and SK Telecom Co., Ltd., South Korea's leading wireless telecommunications operator, are committed to conducting 5G trials with Ericsson.
Google, Inc. has also shown strong interest in 5G. It bought Alpental Technologies, a small company working on 5G projects including millimeter wave technology, this June.
Nokia is also working on its own 5G project with Pontifical Catholic University in Brazil.
