Girl Geek Academy: an Initiative to Teach One Million Girls to Code

According to stats from the International Game Developer's Association, only about 22 percent of people working in the gaming industry are females.
This is shocking and embarrassing since females account for 48 percent of all gamers.
The disparity can also be seen in the male-dominated tech industry despite women producing 12 percent more revenue than their male counterparts.

The Girl Geek Academy has launched an initiative to teach more and more women to code and start their own companies.
According to Tammy Butow, a co-founder of Girl Geek Academy, there is a huge demand for a service that teaches women to take charge in tech.
"We have seen over the years that female-focused groups have helped increase the number of women attending technology events and learning technology skills," Butow said.
Butow has been running Girl Geek Dinner Melbourne for the last couple of years. She later added more workshops covering topics such as JS, CSS, and HTML.
While it had only 350 members at the beginning of last year, the academy now has over 1,000 members. The goal is to teach one million girls to code.
The first class of Girl Geek Academy is to be held at Richmond, Victoria on July 15. The $35 cost of a class ticket also gets the member a free dinner.
The program for the next 12 months is on the Girl Geek Academy's official website.
