Tesla Model S Has Secret 'James Bond' Submarine Mode

Activating a hidden "Easter Egg" feature on Tesla's Model S electric sedan reveals a "James Bond" mode with controls for a submersible car.

YouTube user and Model S owner Josh Heffner uploaded a YouTube video that shows how to activate this secret feature.

Heffner said pressing the "T" button on the Model S electronic dashboard reveals an access code window normally used by technicians to diagnose the car's electronics. Typing in the numbers "007" (which in James Bond-speak means "License to kill") as the access code changes the view of the Model S on the dashboard into the famous submersible Lotus Espirit from the 1977 James Bond movie, The Spy Who Loved Me.

What's notable about this Lotus is it turned into a submarine that allowed Roger Moore (James Bond at the time) to travel underwater.

In the James Bond mode, the screen on a Model S dashboard will display the Lotus Esprit hybrid sportscar/submarine and a "Depth" drop-down menu with the maximum option of 20,000 Leagues as in, you guessed it, Jules Verne's book, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

An Easter egg is an intentional inside joke, hidden message or feature in a work such as a computer program or video game.

And why this cool Easter Egg on very pricey electric sedan?

It seems Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk loved that Lotus Esprit sportscar/submarine so much, he paid US$866,000 to buy it in an auction two years ago. And, yes, Musk is an avid fan of Jules Verne.

Tesla is said to have admitted the Easter Egg does exist. Tesla inserted it with a software upgrade a year ago but it's only now Tesla owners have started discovering it.

Are we certain the James Bond Easter Egg is the only one on a Model S?
