A new study demonstrates that having three to five cups of coffee everyday can result in fewer clogged arteries, which are often the main cause of heart attacks.

Many medical experts still debate about the effects of coffee consumption on cardiovascular health. Researchers, however, discovered that people who drank a moderate amount of coffee a day had the least occurrence of coronary calcium in their arteries.

An international team from the Kangbuk Samsung Hospital in Seoul, South Korea carefully studied the link between drinking coffee and the presence of coronary artery calcium (CAC).

CAC is an early indicator of coronary atherosclerosis, a deadly condition where arteries become clogged-up with fatty residue or deposits known as plaques or atheroma.

These plaques make arteries grow hard and narrow causing blood clots that can trigger a heart attack or stroke.

The team studied a group of more than 25,000 Korean men and women aged around 41 years old that showed no signs of heart disease.

The participants were divided into groups according to coffee consumption. These groups were none, less than one cup per day, one to three cups every day, three to five cups each day and five or more a day.

The group that drank 1.8 cups of coffee every day was detected with a prevalence of 13.4 percent of CAC across all the different coffee drinking groups.

The findings showed those that had less than one cup a day showed a 0.77 percent calcium ratio. Those that drank one to three cups a day had 0.66 percent and those who drank three to five cups a day only had a 0.59 percent calcium ratio.

Those that had more than five cups a day had a 0.81 percent calcium ratio compared to non-coffee drinkers.

The study was published online in the journal, Heart.
