Microsoft Announces Two Smartphones; Samsung S6 has Microsoft Apps

(Photo : Reuters) Microsoft has released stats on Windows Phone, and it doesn't look good for the high-end users.

At MWC 2015, Microsoft unleashed two new Lumia phones with the Windows 8.1 operating system that will later be upgraded to the upcoming cross-platform Windows 10, Computerworld reported.

Microsoft also announced Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung added Microsoft Apps on their Galaxy S6.

Microsoft also announced the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL with a 5-inch and 5.7-inch screen display, respectively. These smartphones will be offered both by At&T and T-Mobile and will be shipped in March and April.

Lumia 640 will be priced at $178 while Lumia 640 XL will cost $245. Microsoft noted that prices may still vary depending on the market and operator.

Microsoft also gives the public a better view of its apps with Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL's Excel spreadsheet, Outlook email and other features with Windows 10. The software giant disclosed a foldable Bluetooth-capable keyboard that can fit in a pocket and will soon hit the market. No prices and specs were issued.

Samsung, Microsoft's close rival, also launched their new phone, the Samsung Galaxy S6. Media present at the press conference noticed Samsung Galaxy S6 had added an uncommon feature. They added three Microsoft Apps on its Home Screen.

Microsoft and Samsung have settled their year long dispute over royalty patent payment fees. The lawsuit filed by Microsoft claims Samsung broke the signed agreement on payment for the royalty patent fees in 2011.

Samsung is one of the many companies selling Android devices that are paying for patent royalty licensing fees to Microsoft. It was reported Microsoft earns around $2 billion a year for licensing fees
