Babe Ruth's first-ever contract with the Boston Red Sox in 1918 fetched US$ 1.02 million at an auction Saturday at the Sports Legends Museum in downtown Baltimore.

The contract was signed by the Bambino himself along with American League president Ban Johnson and Red Sox owner Harry Frazee amounting to US$ 5,000.

The winning bid surpassed Ruth's other contract that sent him to the New York Yankees which was sold for US$ 996,000 at an auction in 2005.

Another Babe Ruth bat was found and auctioned which he used during his early career from 1916-1918 was sold for US$ 214,000 and an autographed baseball went for US$ 96,000.

Yet another baseball was also held for auction claiming to be the first ball ever hit by the Sultan of Swat in Yankee Stadium two months before it opened in 1923. It was said to have been retrieved by a construction worker when Ruth hit the ball in the empty bleachers. The ball bares his signature.

The museum held the auction in honor of Babe Ruth's 100 years since he played his first game in July 11, 1914 as a pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles.

Babe Ruth items has been one of the most sought after memorabilia in the Major Leagues, in fact, some have been sold in auctions for huge amounts of money.

The bat he used to hit his first ever homerun in Yankee Stadium went for nearly US$ 1.3 million at an auction in 2004.

A complete uniform worn by Ruth in 1934 during a barnstorming tour of Japan comprising of socks, pants and all sold in an auction in 2005 for a measly US$ 771,000.
