Kim Jin-Tae, widely known by his stage name Verbal Jint is the most recent musician to be accused of plagiarism.

The South Korean rapper's second track "My Type" for the hit show "Unpretty Rapstar" was released last February 13 and showcased the talents of the contestants, Cheetah and Jessie on the song. However, many viewers have noticed that "My Type" has a strong similarity to the American R&B singer Omarion's song "Post To Be."

Since the similarities between the two tracks were easily discerned, accusations of plagiarism immediately became widespread. While some argued that the melody lines and vocals are different, many called Verbal Jint out for copying the main theme or sound of the track, as well as the introduction. Some posts even made a side by side comparison of the songs.

Commenting on the issue, editor Il-Kwon Kang said, that many popular K-pop songs use American songs for their reference, which is probably why if one listens to Verbal Jint's "My Type" and Omarions's "Post To Be", a notable resemblance can be heard.

As for the issue of plagiarism, he said that it is a rather challenging topic to tackle, as only the original composer of the track can file a lawsuit. He further explained that composers of foreign songs do not usually take the time and trouble to worry about the songs released in Korea.

Il-Kwon added that the music industry has been seeing a "strange trend" where netizens call out musicians for copying other musicians' work and raise "controversies of plagiarism.

Despite the plagiarism issue, "My Type" bagged the number one spot on several music charts since it was released last month.
