Shin Hae-Chul, a popular South Korean rock singer, died as a result of brain damage and medical malpractice after his doctor did not provide him with the proper care needed following his abdominal surgery, police revealed.

In October of last year, Shin, considered a rock icon, passed away less than two weeks after he had undergone gastrolysis surgery. The operation took place at a hospital located in the southern part of Seoul.

Police took months to conduct their investigation, but finally, the Songpa Police has finally concluded that Shin's death was caused by his doctor only identified as Kang, who, alone, decided to perform another procedure on the singer when the singer went to the hospital for his scheduled operation on October 17.

Doctors would normally ask for the patient's approval or the family before proceeding with an operation, however, Kang never asked or informed Shin when he decided to surgically shrink Shin's stomach, during which he accidentally perforated his pericardium (the bag-like sac which encloses the heart and houses the blood vessels) and small intestine.

As reported by the police, the surgical wounds became infected quickly and Kang failed to proceed with the necessary treatment or action, which further inflamed the lining of Shin's stomach. The doctor downplayed the fatal symptoms Shin were experiencing and simply said that the symptoms were "part of the normal recovery process."

Commenting on the issue, Kang denied the allegations and said that Shin's stomach wasn't shrank. Adding that Shin did not follow his advice to stay in the hospital.

After going in and out of the hospital after the surgery, a few days later, Shin collapsed from a heart attack, which prompted an emergency operation. Sadly, he was unable to fight for his life and passed away due to complications and brain damage, as a result of not having enough oxygen.

Police revealed that they are planning to file a medical malpractice charge against the doctor sometime this week.
