William Goldman is the man behind the stage adaptation and film adaptation of the novel. The film adaptation, released back in 1990 was also based on Stephen King's novel and was directed by Rob Reiner. The movie version featured Kathy Bates, who took home the Academy Award for Best actress for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes and James Caan who played Paul Sheldon.

The scenes happen in an isolated, snow-encased town. Novelist Paul Sheldon, who was driving his car on a difficult, icy road accidentally loses control, crashes and becomes pinned inside his car along with the manuscript neatly tucked away in his briefcase.

His self-proclaimed number 1 fan, Annie Wilkes comes across the accident and helps him get out of the car. He takes her home and nurses him back to good health. Everything goes well until she finds the manuscript for his new book and learns that the writer has decided to kill off Misery-a heroine in the book who was involved in a series of romances.

Paul finds himself faced with a difficult challenge after Annie forces him to rewrite his book. While he tries to figure out how to modify the book, he at the same time, also has to find a way to escape from his captor.

Will Frears is set to direct the stage adaptation of the Misery. A theater, as well as the dates have yet to be announced.
