A new study reveals men are apparently more narcissistic than women, according to researchers from the University of Buffalo.

The findings were taken from data accumulated over 31 years from 475,000 participants whose personalities were studied along with their psychological examinations. The results demonstrate men have the tendency to be more self-absorbed than women on average.

Apart from investigating and observing test subjects, researchers also studied more information from 355 articles, dissertations and manuscripts, including surveys as part of their research.

Narcissistic qualities are apparently divided into three categories: grandiosity; exhibitionism; entitlement and extreme self-interest related to authority.

The greatest differences lie in entitlement. Men on average were discovered to be more willing to exploit other people for their self interest compared to women, according to the study.

Attitudes in authority and leadership were also found to be the second traits with the most significant difference among men and women.

According to Emily Grijalva from the University of Buffalo, the product of narcissism often leads to various interpersonal dysfunctions. This includes an inability to preserve long and healthy relationships and the promotion of unethical behavior and aggression.

Researchers believe males often have greater narcissistic tendencies as opposed to females due to gender stereotypes and expectations. Investigators also think female stereotypes with leadership could also partly explain the lack of leadership roles in women.

Grijalva states that women often receive harsh criticism for being aggressive or exuding an authoritative nature that creates more pressure for women compared to men. This also leads to suppressing displays of narcissistic behavior.

Men may exhibit more assertiveness and a desire for power but the one category that both sexes exude equally is in the exhibitionism trait where both are equally likely to display vanity and self absorption.

College students that attended school from 1990 to 2013 were studied and observed revealed that levels of narcissism didn't rise nor fell during the study period. This study was published in the journal, Psychological Bulletin.
