Google might not have the support of manufacturers when it launches its new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) next month and the only supported device is reportedly the Nexus 6.

The reason for the lack of support is due to the MVNO moving between Wi-Fi, T-Mobile USA and Sprint networks automatically. Since T-Mobile is on GSM and Sprint on CDMA, Google needs to add new networking to make the two carriers work together.

The only device Google can rework without manufacturer consent is the Nexus 6. For all other devices, Google must work with the manufacturer to make sure the device doesn't break when it changes some of the networking.

This doesn't mean the Nexus 6 will be the only supported device throughout 2015. Google will definitely be partnering with other manufacturers to make sure its mobile network doesn't sink into obscurity.

Google is looking to compete with the carriers the same way it competes with broadband providers with Google Fiber. While its fiber experiment seems to be working, carriers might be less threatened by an MVNO.

Sundar Pichai has already confirmed the wireless service is in the works, but the time of launch is still unknown. Google will most likely announce it before I/O in June.
