Racist Video Triggers Sigma Alpha Epsilon to Close University of Oklahoma Chapter

Sigma Alpha Epsilon Shuts Down University of Oklahoma chapter

The national headquarters of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity has decided to close its Oklahoma Kappa chapter at the University of Oklahoma following the discovery of a racist video.

The national headquarters of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity has decided to close its Oklahoma Kappa chapter at the University of Oklahoma following the discovery of a racist video.

The SAE's leadership said in a statement that it was disgusted with the discovery of an inappropriate video that showed members singing a racist chant with the n-word.

The video shows a group of young white students chanting the n-word loudly and boisterously while riding on a bus.

"We apologize for the unacceptable and racist behavior of the individuals in the video, and we are disgusted that any member would act in such a way," it added.

Brad Cohen, the fraternity's national president, said he was not only shocked and disappointed but disgusted by what he described as an outright display of racism displayed in the video.

"The board members determined with no mental reservation whatsoever that this chapter needed to be closed immediately. I am proud of my fellow board members because we mean what we say," Cohen said.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon's national chapter shut down the chapter Sunday night, suspended all of the chapter's members and threatened to remove those responsible from the fraternity for life.

"Although Sigma Alpha Epsilon regrets the closure, we believe members must be held responsible for their actions," Cohen added.

In the video, the students are heard chanting, "There will never be a ni**** in SAE. You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me."

University of Oklahoma President David Boren said an investigation is ongoing to determine if the video indeed involved University of Oklahoma students.

"If OU students are involved, this behavior will not be tolerated and will be addressed very quickly. This behavior is reprehensible and contrary to all of our values," said Boren.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon (ΣΑΕ, also SAE) is the largest North American Greek-letter social college fraternity. It was founded at the University of Alabama on March 9, 1856.
