Love Hormone, Oxytocin, Could Help Men Lose Weight

(Photo : Girls/HBO) Oxytocin, otherwise known as the Love Hormone, can boost metabolism and lessen calorie intake for men.

Men that want to lose weight can now consider the love hormone, oxytocin, as an effective dieting factor.

A new study reveals this hormone can apparently reduce appetite and lessen unnecessary calorie intake.

Oxytocin is often called the love hormone since it's linked to many activities where people bond together such as sex, kissing, hugging and also breastfeeding. This hormone is also used to induce labor during child birth and is being considered a potential treatment in disorders such as autism.

Previous animal studies on oxytocin have proven this hormone can boost metabolism. This new study provides important evidence that oxytocin can also be considered a weight loss tool for those likely to overeat.

This small study involved 25 men about 27 years old on average with half either overweight or obese. The men were divided into two groups. One self administered an oxytocin nasal spray and the other was given a placebo just before they ordered breakfast from a menu.

When the participants asked for oxytocin, they received twice as much as their orders. Researchers then observed how much food was eaten. During the second round of experiments, the two groups switched. The placebo group was given the nasal oxytocin spray and vice versa.

Researchers found those participants that had taken oxytocin consumed 122 fewer calories on average than those who took the placebo. The oxytocin group was also less likely to eat less fatty food, about 9 grams fewer than normal.

According to Elizabeth Lawson of the Harvard Medical School, these results sound promising but further study is needed as oxytocin can be an effective treatment for obesity and other metabolic complications. The next step of the study is to observe whether or not oxytocin is also effective in women.
