For 14 hours, an 18-month-old baby waited for someone to rescue her from her family's car that plunged into a river in Utah.

Her 25-year-old mother, Lynn Groesbeck, was in the driver's seat, dead, following the accident that brought the car into the river.

The baby was discovered by a fisherman inside the car, hanging upside down in her car seat just a few centimeters above the flowing water.

The toddler was rushed to a hospital in Salt Lake City, where her condition has been upgraded to stable from critical.

How the baby survived 18 hours without feeding and in cold environment still puzzled fishermen and policemen who rescued the toddler.

The extent of the baby's injury was not disclosed although authorities said the baby's condition is now stable. Police said they would not be releasing any further details unless the baby's condition changed.

No one actually saw what happened to the vehicle before it plunged into the ice-cold Spanish Fork River.

Police, however, believe the car careered into the river after hitting a concrete barrier at about 10:30 PM on Friday.

A fisherman noticed the car in the river at 12:30 PM Saturday, prompting him to get near to see if someone was trapped inside.

There, he saw the girl dangling above the water as the rapid flowed through the car.

The fisherman said he immediately called the police because he described the scene as too complicated for the child if he rescues the baby himself.

Policemen and firefighters entered the river to rescue the 18-month-old baby, who was rushed to the hospital and treated for hypothermia.

The baby's name was not released.
