The 68-year-old Jackson, a baseball Hall of Famer, purchased the letters after the Yankee's last game at the stadium in 2008. The letters had been adorning the ballpark since 1976.

Jackson recalled thinking of a few items to buy before the old Yankee Stadium wa torn down.

"But I kept thinking about the stadium lettering, and if there was any way for me to own it. I ended up making an offer and was thrilled when it was accepted. It's been a privilege to own such a recognizable piece of baseball history," he told the Associated Press.

How much Jackson paid for the letters was not disclosed.

Starting March 26, the letters "N" and "Y" will be displayed on the seventh floor of Sotheby's galleries to inform the public that the "Yankee Stadium" is up for sale.

Outbidding auctioneers may be a challenge for those who want to own a piece of New York's sports history.

But the real challenge for the buyer, really, is where to put the monumental letters, which range from 2 to 10 feet in width and constructed with aluminum casing and Plexiglas.

The old Yankee Stadium was built from 1922 to 1923 for $2.4 million ($32 million in 2014 dollars).
