Last October 2012, Shailene Woodley was excited and happy to be cast as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Photos of her on set, with Mary Jane's iconic red hair soon surfaced online.
Sadly, four months later, director Marc Webb decided to cut all of her scenes. The 40-year old director explained that he wanted to restructure and streamline the story so that it only focused on Peter (played by Andrew Garfield) and Gwen (Emma Stone).

At a press conference for Insurgent, Shailene was asked by Clevver Movies if she would still be interested in taking on the role of Mary Jane Watson for the Spider-Man reboot, which now joins the Marvel cinematic universe, to which the 23-year old actress replied, "Heck yeah!" And revealed that she hasn't heard the news about the reboot.
While the Divergent star may still be game to play MJ, it is kind of unlikely that she will be given the opportunity to play the role again, given that Sony and Marvel are reportedly looking for teenagers to portray teenagers. If that is true, then that would mean Shailene is too old to play Peter Parker's love interest, but then again, Andrew Garfield wasn't in his teenage years when he played the role of Peter and nobody complained about it.
The Spider-Man reboot is scheduled for release on July 28, 2017. There are rumors that Drew Goddard, known for "World War Z," is onboard to direct the upcoming movie which is said to be entitled, "The Spectacular Spider-Man."
